Databases for All Students

Biography Reference Center. EBSCO Publishing, n.d. Web. 30 June 2016.
The Biography Reference Center is a database which provides access to over  430,000 biographies. Students are able to browse genre categories such as: inventors, athletes, African Americans, women, Native Americans, artists, musicians and more. The home page includes a featured biography as well as a scrolling marquee with photographs. Students will need a Somerset County library card to access this resource.

Databases for K-5th Grades

BookFlix is a collection of paired fiction videos and nonfiction books. Each pairing follows the same format and has the same features, making it easy to use for the youngest of learners. Each pairing has a section of puzzles which enable students to choose if a statement is fact or fiction, a meet the author feature and web links to related topics for further information. Students must have a library card to access this database.

CultureGrams Kids Edition. Proquest, n.d. Web. 30 June 2016.
CultureGrams Kid's Edition database provides information for over 200 countries with full reports on about 76 countries. Students can access information via a map or through alphabetical lists or lists by continent. Tabs across the top include photos, slideshows, videos, interviews, famous people, recipes, flags and graphs/tables. Students may need a remote access password if not at WES.

CultureGrams States Edition database provides information on each of the 50 states broken down into 5 categories: The Place, History, The People, Cultural Note and Fun Facts & Contacts. Students can access their state of choice via the map or by list. Students may need a remote access password if not at WES.

Databases for 3rd grade and beyond

The SIRS Discoverer database provides reliable information about any topic a student would be interested in or need to know. The broad category headings allow students to browse easily to find information under such headings as: history, social studies, people, sports and technology. Each source type is clearly marked with an icon which shows if it is a website, a magazine, a reference book, a newspaper or just an image. Students may need a remote access password if not at WES.

TrueFlix is nonfiction eBook collection features short video clips and nonfiction books including topics such as: Native Americans, The Civil War, Biographies, 13 Colonies, Westward Expansion, Animal Kingdoms and much more. Each category is broken down into subcategory which then present a short video and a nonfiction book.  Students will need a Somerset County library card to access this database.
